Where No Man Has Gone Before

If you're interested in Star Trek enough to even read this I don't need to tell you that this was the second pilot. As such very few of the extras appearing here became regulars for the show.

Recreation Room Scene

Known: William Shatner as Kirk, Leonard Nimoy as Spock, Paul Carr as Kelso, Eddie Paskey

Unknown: 3 male crewmen in sciences uniforms (#1-3), 1 male crewman in operations uniform (#4), 2 male crewmen in command uniforms (#5-6), 1 male crewman in jumpsuit (#7), 1 female crewwoman (#8) in leisure clothes.

imageSo we're in the very first scene of the second pilot and Eddie Paskey already makes his first appearance! Here he is playing chess with an unknown crewmember (#7) who will also make several appearances in the series. The crewman in command uniform (#6) walking behind Kelso on the bridge will reappear later in the engineering team sent down to Delta Vega. Three-dimensional chess makes it first appearance, and note also the missing reflection from the view screen in the table.

Transporter Room Scene

Known: William Shatner as Kirk, Leonard Nimoy as Spock, James Doohan as Scott.

Unknown: Transporter technician (#9)

We only see the arm of the transporter technician in this scene, but we'll get a better view later. The transporter console is actually the helm console from the bridge.

Scott, #9

Corridor Scene

Known: William Shatner as Kirk, Leonard Nimoy as Spock, Gary Lockwood as Mitchell, Andrea Dromm as Smith, Paul Fix as Piper, George Takei as Sulu, Eddie Paskey

Unknown: 1 male crewman in jumpsuit (#7), 2 male crewmen in command uniforms (#10, 14), 4 male crewmen in operations uniforms (#4-6, 15), 2 female crewwomen in command uniforms (#8, 13), 1 male crewman in sciences uniform (#11), transporter technician (#9), 1 crewman in environmental protection suit (#12).

Corridor scenes early in season 1 are always difficult, there are so many extras in them, usually seen from the back and very difficult to tell apart. It is also usual when filming scenes like these to have the same extras run back and forth, creating the illusion of a crowd.

There is extra footage from this scene in the original version of the pilot that was shown to NBC, which can be viewed on YouTube here. It is pretty interesting, it shows Eddie Paskey climbing a ladder, as well as the first appearances of Mitchell, Yeoman Smith, Doctor Piper and Sulu. You can see the backs of Mitchell and Smith briefly in the aired episode, but the only surviving frames of Piper and Sulu is Sulu's hand in front of the red alert warning light. Also featured is a cool shot from above a grille looking down on the set. The shot of a crewman in an environmental suit (#12) can be seen later in The Man Trap, and the suit itself will be reused by the ill-fated crewman Barnhart in the same episode.

All the extras from the rec. room scene appears again here, except one (#3). The crewman playing chess with Eddie Paskey appears in an operations jumpsuit (#7). The operations crewman walking behind Kelso on the bridge is seen carrying a toolbox (#6). The blonde crewwoman in leisure clothes appears here in a command uniform (#8), and the crewman she is talking to can be seen in the cut footage (#5). The crewman next to the view screen (#4) can be seen talking to the transporter technician (#9) from the transporter room scenes.

I've always found it interesting that there is no divider in the floor between the interior of the turbo lift and the corridor.

Bridge Scene – Leaving the galaxy

Known: William Shatner as Kirk, Leonard Nimoy as Spock, Gary Lockwood as Mitchell, Sally Kellerman as Dehner, Paul Fix as Piper, Paul Carr as Kelso, James Doohan as Scott, George Takei as Sulu, Lloyd Haynes as Alden, Andrea Dromm as Smith

Unknown: 3 crewmen in sciences uniforms (#5, 16-17)

Only 3 extras in this scene, one of which leaves in the first few seconds (#17). As the angle reverses, the African-American crewman in sciences uniform jumps back a few steps. It seems plausible that the shots of Kelso for the rec room scenes was filmed simultaneously with this one, there is an identical angle used, suggesting that the camera was locked in place. One shot shows the environmental engineering station vacant, while all other shots shows it occupied. The crewman seated at the engineering station (#5) appeared in both the rec room and corridor scenes, but is now wearing a blue sciences uniform.

Bridge Scene – repairs

Known: William Shatner as Kirk, Leonard Nimoy as Spock, Sally Kellerman as Dehner, James Doohan as Scott, Paul Carr as Kelso, Lloyd Haynes as Alden, Andrea Dromm as Smith

Unknown: 2 male crewmen in sciences uniforms (#5, 16), 2 male crewmen in jumpsuits (#7, 18), 1 male crewman in command uniform (#19)

One of the repair crew members also appeared in the rec room and corridor scenes.

Sickbay and Bridge Scenes

Known: William Shatner as Kirk, Gary Lockwood as Mitchell, Paul Fix as Piper, Sally Kellerman as Dehner, Paul Carr as Kelso

Unknown: 1 male crewman in command uniform (#20), 2 male crewmen in sciences uniforms (#5, 16)

Briefing Room Scene

Known: William Shatner as Kirk, Leonard Nimoy as Spock, Sally Kellerman as Dehner, Paul Fix as Piper, Paul Carr as Kelso, George Takei as Sulu

Unknown: 1 male crewman in jumpsuit (#7)

The crewman walking in the corridor as Dehner enters appears to be the same as from the rec room, corridor, and bridge repair scenes.

Spock, #7, Sulu, Dehner, Scott

Transporter Room Scene

Known: William Shatner as Kirk, Leonard Nimoy as Spock, Gary Lockwood as Mitchell, Sally Kellerman as Dehner, Paul Fix as Piper, James Doohan as Scott

Unknown: Transporter technician (#9)

We finally get a good look of the transporter technician's face. A detail in the transporter alcove ceiling will be changed for the next episode.

Delta Vega Exterior Scene

Known: William Shatner as Kirk, Leonard Nimoy as Spock, Gary Lockwood as Mitchell, Sally Kellerman as Dehner, Paul Fix as Piper, Paul Carr as Kelso, Eddie Paskey

Eddie Paskey appears here as a security guard, but there will be better views of him later in the episode. Note that the sign says "Delta-Vega Station", with a hyphen.

Kelso, Leslie, Spock, Mitchell, Dehner, Kirk, Piper

Delta Vega Control Room Scene

Known: William Shatner as Kirk, Leonard Nimoy as Spock, Lloyd Haynes as Alden, Paul Carr as Kelso

Unknown: 3 male crewmen in jumpsuits (#21-23), 1 crewman in command uniform (#6)

I think the command uniformed crewman is the same from the corridor scene.

#21, Alden, #22, #23 Kirk, #6, Kelso

Delta Vega Brig Scene

Known: William Shatner as Kirk, Leonard Nimoy as Spock, Gary Lockwood as Mitchell, Sally Kellerman as Dehner, Paul Fix as Piper, Eddie Paskey

We can speculate whether Paskey's character here is Leslie or someone else. Note that as a security guard he should probably have worn an operations uniform, but that fact had not been established yet, as this is in fact the first security guard ever to appear.

Delta Vega Control Room Scene

Known: William Shatner as Kirk, Leonard Nimoy as Spock, Paul Carr as Kelso

Unknown: 3 male crewmen in jumpsuits (#21-23), 1 crewman in command uniform (#6)

This scene features the same extras as the scene above.

Delta Vega Exterior Fight Scene

Known: Dick Crockett as Kirk, Hal Needham as Mitchell

Something very closely related to extras and stand-ins are stunt doubles and I thought it could be fun to show some pictures of them too. Here are Dick Crockett doubling for Shatner, and Hal Needham for Lockwood. Oh, and the infamous "James R. Kirk" tombstone too!

Bridge Closing Scene

Known: William Shatner as Kirk, Leonard Nimoy as Spock, James Doohan as Scott, Andrea Dromm as Smith

Unknown: 2 male crewmen in sciences uniforms (#5, #24), 1 male crewman in operations uniform (#25), 1 male crewman in command uniform (#26)

It is not revealed if the helmsman (#24) in this shot is Alden or an unidentified extra. Note that James Doohan has to keep his right hand under the console to hide his missing finger. The crewman at the communications console (#26) appears to be sleeping!

Kirk, Scott, #5, #24 (Alden?) #25, Spock #26, Spock, Smith

Isn't crewman #5 in Where No Man Has Gone Before (seated at the engineering station, wearing sciences blue) the same actor from The Cage who stood next to Pike on the bridge holding a clipboard?
